True Life: Sometimes, work can be a drag.
I have a really awesome job, don’t get me wrong. But my overall goal in life is to not have an office job, and I’m getting impatient for that dream to come true.
Also, blog reading does NOT help this situation I’ve read some phenomenal posts lately that make me want to quit my job ASAP. (which, don’t worry, I’m not actually going to do!) Two posts from last Tuesday (twos-day? hahaha. ok maybe that’s just funny to me) spoke straight to my heart:
- Kraig from Young Cheap Living reminded me that our lives are ending one day at a time- don’t waste your life working a job just so you can buy extra stuff that you really don’t need.
- Sarah from Sweet Miles posted about her journey to getting a new job in her desired career field. She realized that she wanted a career change and went after it- ending up in a job that she’s truly excited for!
As awesome as these posts are, they are actually a huge problem for me. I’m a very impulsive person when it comes to big life decisions (see also: a few spur of the moment breakups and moving out of apartments with less than a week’s notice). I was so tempted when I read these posts to QUIT! IMMEDIATELY! But I know that’s not a good idea, especially when I have no other money making abilities at the moment.
So instead of making a decision I immediately regret, I’ve been brainstorming some ways to keep myself happy in my current gig while I keep saving up my dolla dolla billz. Hopefully these tips can help you, too!
How to Stay Happy at Work
Make a list of things you love about your job. These can be anything from “I like that there is a window next to my desk” to “my coworker’s plant is really cool” to “I like when I can help people connect to the printers” to “it’s nice that I can work flexible hours”. If possible, display this list somewhere on your desk for a constant reminder of the positive side of your job. Continually update the list as you remember more great things!
Make a list of awesome memories you’ve had at your job. Write down the memories that give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Some examples for me: sending emails that have traveled through other offices to high-ranking leaders and ended up in my best friend’s inbox; getting called into the big big big boss’ office for a meeting where she asked my opinion on something- and than actually took my advice!; my boss poking fun at me (in a friendly way) during staff meetings.
Imagine that you’re leaving the office at the end of this week. Pretend that you’re walking in to your boss’ office and telling him or her that you quit. Picture saying goodbye to your coworkers. I really like my boss and coworkers, and I’m generally a really emotional person, so just imagining these situations makes me want to cry and never leave my job! (note: this obviously doesn’t work if you hate your coworkers or boss, haha)
Learn a new task. Ask a coworker to teach you what they do. At the very least, you’ll get a break from your normal tasks for a few hours. At the very best, you’ll learn a new skill.
Challenge yourself. See how fast you can complete a certain task. Seriously, time yourself! I have to put in purchase orders for supplies every so often and I’ve started timing myself to see how quickly I can finish. Also fun can be a physical workout goal- challenge yourself to do 10 pushups and 10 situps every hour. You’ll get stronger and BONUS! exercise gives you endorphins and endorphins make you happy and happy people just don’t kill their husbands! (name that movie)
Look on the bright side. Some days you may experience the awesome (sarcasm, duh) phenomenon where doing your work in a timely manner means that you get saddled with extra work from people who slacked off. My coworker was talking to me about that the other day, and really put it in perspective. He said, “People give you more work because they know they can depend on you”. Instead of seeing extra work as a curse, try to look at it as a good thing– your boss clearly trusts you to get the work done. Flip around your mentality so that you see the positive of every situation. (easier said than done, I know)
Change your desktop background. I love picking motivational quotes for my computer background. Or you could do a funny joke or picture that makes you laugh when you’re feeling down.
Calculate your daily salary. If you’re not feeling motivated to go to work in the morning, remind yourself that every day at work means an extra $xx in your bank account. Money is an awesome motivator! #financialfreedomfund
Be thankful that you have a job. Cliche, I know. But it’s true. There are a lot of people out there that would kill for my cushy office job- I need to be grateful that I even have it.
